Types of Crepe Paper

180 Gram Crepe Paper
180 gram crepe paper (Italian crepe paper) is a high quality crepe paper with a lot of stretch. This paper can be used to make almost any flower, big and small. This heavy weight paper is durable and manageable, which can be important depending the flower you're making. The colour selection for this paper is endless. There are so many hues to select from, it can be hard to decide what to get.
If you look online for giant crepe paper flower tutorials, 180 gram Italian paper is utilized by almost all artisans.

Extra Fine Crepe Paper
This paper can also have a lot of stretch, but it's far more delicate than the heavier weights. Sixty gram paper can give you really soft impression with your flowers, but easily rips and tears, so care needs to be taken when sculpting your petals.
This paper is really beautiful for smaller, more realistic looking flowers, but won't hold up if used for giant crepe paper flowers.

Double Sided Or Doublette Crepe Paper
Double sided crepe paper, or sometimes called doublette crepe (two sheets of crepe paper glued together to give you a thicker and multicoloured crepe paper) is really a mixed bag. It's not suitable for giant paper flowers, or should I say, it would cost a lot to make a giant flower with this paper, as you don't get a lot in one fold. There are times it's not suited for smaller (realistic) flowers either. I don't use this paper often, but the benefit of this paper is the two colours it comes in. You have one colour on one side and another colour on the other, with the exception of double sided white crepe. These colours can give you a beautiful and vibrant flower.
A couple drawbacks of double sided crepe is the lack of stretch it sometimes has or how it easily tears. While using this paper, some of my petals just won't stretch, or when I try and stretch it the paper tears. It's rare, but it can happen. This can be frustrating when I've cut out a certain amount of petals for my flower, and I have to go back and cut more.

Crepe Paper Streamers
Crepe paper streamers – You know, those rolls you get at the party store, or the dollar store. These do NOT work well for making flower petals, but I have used them for stamens. Crepe paper streamers are very thin, with little stretch, and tear easily.
I have found thicker metallic streamers, which I used for leaves and they held up well.

Metallic Crepe Paper
Metallic crepe paper is usually a heavy weight crepe with a metallic coating. I haven't used this much, but It's not as good as the regular heavy weight paper, as the coating limits the amount of stretch to the paper and it's less durable.

Chinese Crepe Paper
I call this Chinese crepe paper because it's made in China, and there are endless sellers in China that sell and ship this product. It's a heavy weight paper, but not a 180 gram weight. I would say it's closer to 120 gram. This paper is far less expensive to purchase and to ship compared to the higher quality papers. If you're just starting out, this paper might be good for practice. I've used Chinese crepe paper for years and have a lot of rolls in my stash that I still utilize today.

How is Crepe Paper made?

On-Machine Crepe Paper
On-Machine crepe paper refers to paper that is creped on a paper machine, in-line with other parts of the paper making process. This is a more efficient, cost-effective method for higher volume applications. Anything you can do in one process instead of two will cost less. The amount of stretch created depends on the machine, the basis weight, and whether it's wet or dry.
Wet On-Machine crepe paper uses a blade earlier in the paper making process while there is still a lot of water in the paper. The blade scrapes the surface of the paper at an angle, creating back pressure and wrinkling the surface. It is then sent through dryers to dry it and roll it up. This is how we create our heavyweight crepe paper here at Ivex Specialty Paper.
Dry On-Machine crepe paper uses a blade that creates back pressure as well, but this process is performed after the paper is dried and before it is rolled up. This is the typical method used to make lightweight crepe like toilet paper and paper towels.

Off-Machine Crepe Paper
Off-Machine crepe paper refers to paper that is done in separate process from the actual paper making. The paper is made into a roll and moved to either another line, building or entirely different company to perform the creping. This is typically the preferred method for lower volume applications.
Off-machine typically starts by wetting the paper and then running a blade over it. This is similar to on-machine wet creping, but done on a machine other than the original paper machine that the paper was formed on.
Embossed paper is not technically crepe paper, but is made to mimic it. It involves taking dry paper and running it through two large rolls that mash an imprint on the paper. This essentially damages the paper a bit in order to give it an artificial stretch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the benefits of crepe paper?

A: If you want to protect your surfaces while painting, you can use crepe paper masking tape. Its smooth crepe paper backing offers excellent conformability and can be torn by hand. It can be used for many applications, including packaging, sealing, and temporary fixing. Its high conformability is especially useful for intricate work on irregular or curved surfaces. You can even use it in your car to cover your windows!
Another option for masking is crepe paper masking tape. This tape features a thick, heavy crepe paper backing and a natural rubber adhesive for strong adhesion and superior holding power. It is a staple in classrooms because of its reliability and great performance. It also comes with a lifetime warranty and is designed for a variety of applications. There are many advantages to using crepe paper masking tape.
This type of tape is generally thicker than other types of masking tape. It is also less conformable than finely structured crepe paper. Designed for general use, it is more durable than the other two. It is best suited for masking flat surfaces, bundling cables, or labeling toolboxes. Standard crepe paper backing is not as conformable as fine-structured crepe paper and is more suitable for general purposes.
General purpose masking tape is an economical general purpose option. Its paper backing allows for excellent surface contact with various surfaces, and it is US government-approved for arts & crafts products. It also meets the standards of the LHAMA (Labeling Hazardous Art Materials Act) by meeting test method ASTM D-4236. This label means that the product has been tested and is free from harmful materials.
Professional-grade tapes have a 14-day warranty. While this is sufficient for residential painting jobs, it is not enough for industrial coatings. In order to stay up to its claims, performance masking tapes must withstand chemical and solvent exposure. Using professional-grade masking tapes ensures quality results and a smoother workflow.

Q: Are crepe paper and tissue paper the same?

A: Crepe paper is thicker than tissue paper and more opaque. It's also wrinkly, whereas tissue paper is smooth. Walmart sells seven or eight different colors of crepe paper rolls in the party aisle.

Q: Why is it called crepe paper?

A: Crepe paper takes its name from crêpe fabric, which is similarly characterized by a crinkled, wavy surface. The creping process adds strength and elasticity, and depending on the manufacturing treatment, a range of different effects can be achieved.

Q: Is crepe paper stretchy?

A: This is sometimes referred to as "heavy" crepe and is in the 160g to 180g weight range. Perfect for lots of different flower types and foliage, and holds shape well, and very versatile. Typically comes in rolls stretch is around 250%.

Q: How durable is crepe paper?

A: Crepe papers prevent scratches and damage thanks to their thick strength. Since its thick texture prevents the products from being damaged, it is often used as a protector between products.

Q: Why is crepe paper so expensive?

A: (P.S. If you're wondering why some rolls are more expensive than others despite the same weight per gsm, its probably because the colours are more unique or rare. The crepe paper makers sometimes produce seasonal colours, metallic colours, paper with gradients, or waterproof versions, hence the higher prices.)

Q: Why is crepe expensive?

A: Crepe fabric made from silk or wool costs significantly more than synthetic crepe fabric. You can purchase this type of fabric either in yarn or bolt form, and additional charges will be applied to fabric that is dyed or treated with fire retardants or other substances.

Q: Is crepe paper thick?

A: Italian crepe comes in different weights, and 180 gsm is referred to as "heavy weight" for a reason. As the thickest crepe, it's sturdy and will hold its final shape very well. Just try to tear it.

Q: Is crepe paper non toxic?

A: The crape paper releases no toxic substances in sufficient quantities to cause either a health hazard or a hazard to the intended properties of the product being sterilized during or after the sterilization process. Crepe paper is used for wrapping materials.

Q: Does crepe paper fade?

A: Even with coats of sprays or color, your crepe will fade over time if put in sunlight. Let your clients know as well, so that they can preserve your art for as long as possible. I'd love to hear about your preferred method of stopping or slowing down crepe paper fading.

Q: Is crepe paper fireproof?

A: Use crepe paper to make colorful classroom décor, flowers, butterflies, mummies, and other crafts. Paper is easy to cut, fold, and glue and works well for both 2D and 3D projects. And if you weren't already excited about this versatile paper, it's also flame-resistant, bleed-resistant, and fade-resistant.

Q: What do people use crepe paper for?

A: These types of paper come in unique colors and textures, and they can be used to produce unforgettable designs. Unlike the thickness of cardstock, crepe paper is stretchy and sturdy enough to be used with a dry iron. Tissue paper is a great filler product for gift packaging or any other creative projects.

A: The term "tissue paper" can include many products made from either crepe or kraft. Products like toilet paper and paper towels are types of lightweight crepe paper that is made using an on-machine dry creping process.

Q: What is crepe paper coated in?

A: Plastic-coated crepe paper with mesh is a reinforced compound, made of a layer of corrugated paper, an inner layer of polyester mesh and an outer layer of PE (polyethylene).

Q: Does crepe paper bleed wet?

A: The colors will bleed from the crepe paper onto the watercolor paper creating an interesting effect. It's time to see the result! Remove the wet tissue paper and let the watercolor paper dry completely. We found out that the colors bled mostly around the colored pieces, not so much through them.

Q: Can you write on crepe paper?

A: Finally, I've had similar success using Copic markers on all weights of crepe paper. The ink seems to spread faster on doublette (which makes sense as it generally acts like a sponge for any liquid).

Q: Is crepe paper eco friendly?

A: Renewable and sustainable (Crepe paper is made of cellulose which comes from 30-year old trees. Suppliers of cellulose replace one tree for every tree cut down.) Compatible with Steam, EO Gas and Gamma Radiation sterilization processes.
