Confetti For Wedding

Confetti are small pieces or streamers of paper, mylar, or metallic material which are usually thrown at celebrations, especially parades and weddings. The origins are from the Latin confectum, with confetti the plural of Italian confetto, small sweet. Modern paper confetti trace back to symbolic rituals of tossing grains and sweets during special occasions, traditional for numerous cultures throughout history as an ancient custom dating back to pagan times,but adapted from sweets and grains to paper through the centuries. Confetti are manufactured in multiple colors, and commercially available confetti come in many different shapes. A distinction is made between confetti and glitter; glitter is smaller than confetti (pieces usually no larger than 1 mm) and is universally shiny. Most table confetti is also shiny. While they are called metallic confetti they are actually metallized PVC. Most party supply stores carry paper and metallic confetti. Confetti are commonly used at social gatherings such as parties, weddings, and Bar Mitzvahs. The simplest confetti are simply shredded paper (see ticker-tape parade), and can be made with scissors or a paper shredder. Chads punched out of scrap paper are also common. A hole punch makes small round chads, and a ticket punch makes more elaborate chads. Most pieces of paper flats will flutter as tumblewings giving long flight times.

The price is right

It's one of the most affordable options to toss, with the exception of rice or birdseed. Prices start around $4.00 and go up from there, depending on how much you need.

Variety and texture

You can find the confetti anywhere, so you won't have to stress over where to find the perfect send off. There are so many versions available, including various styles, shapes, and colors. You can mix and match the different sizes and colors. There are petals, flowers, metallic, and even paper confetti to make your wedding day that much more special. Choosing the right confetti that falls slowly to the ground gives your photographer plenty of time to capture the magic.

Easy usage

Confetti is easy to use, so it's just a matter of deciding how you want your guests to toss it while celebrating at your wedding venue. They can toss handfuls into the air, use confetti cannons, or use party wedding confetti poppers to add to the celebration.

Environmentally friendly

There are biodegradable options available so that you can use it safely outdoors. It also eliminates the need for a lot of cleanup, but some will still be required. Fully biodegradable confetti leaves no trace; however, this depends on the weather. If it's wet outside, then it can break down within hours, but if it's dry, then it hangs around until Mother Nature can break it down with wind and rain. It's also safe to use anywhere, since there are no flames involved.

The history of confetti dates back to the middle ages. Medieval Italians used to throw various objects during parades, such as eggs, mud pellets, bits of bread, fruit and coins. Rather than being thrown by spectators, these were thrown by the parade's participants into the gathered crowd.

Starting in the 1700s, these objects were replaced with candy-coated seeds, such as coriander seeds. The Italian word for confetti remains, to this day, 'coriandoli'. We get the word 'confetti' from another Italian sweet – sugared almonds, which were never thrown at weddings, but instead handed out as favours.

In 1875, the first paper confetti was manufactured for the Carnivale di Milano. It took the form of small paper discs, not unlike the kind of confetti we use today. It didn't take long for confetti to catch on in the UK, where it was first used at a wedding in 1895. That year, the word even made it into the Oxford English Dictionary!

Before this, wedding guests in the UK showered the newlyweds with uncooked rice (less commonly, wheat and barley). These grains symbolised fertility. It was thought that sprinkling the married couple with rice would bring luck when it came to starting a family.

The reason that we began to replace rice with Italy's paper confetti was probably down to comfort. Uncooked rice is hard and sharp, and being pelted with rice can be more than a little painful.

If your venue has banned confetti – or if you choose not to use it, for whatever reason – here are some confetti substitutes that still look great in pictures.

Blowing bubbles. You can hire or buy a bubble machine, or give each guest a mini bubble bottle to blow themselves.

Balloons. Give each guest a brightly coloured helium balloon on a string to hold in photos. You can even get balloons with confetti inside. (Don't release any balloons outdoors, as this is bad for the environment.)

Birdseed. This is both biodegradable and safe to be consumed by wildlife.

Dried leaves. You can scatter the leaves whole, or use a craft hole punch to create shapes such as hearts and stars.

Popcorn. Again, this is wildlife-friendly and will dissolve with rain. Use plain, unseasoned corn.

Fabric pompoms. These should only be scattered indoors, of course, but they're much easier to clean up than confetti.

Artificial snow. This is perfect for winter weddings. Be sure to check that the snow you're using is biodegradable and made of natural ingredients.

Ribbon wands. Create these by gluing or tying colourful satin ribbons to wooden sticks, and give one to each of your guests to wave in photos. You can even attach tiny bells for a fun sound effect.

Cleaning floors
1.Sweep up the majority. Use a broom to sweep it into a pile and use a dustpan to scoop it all up.
2.Use a vacuum. Pick up any remaining bits of confetti with a vacuum, using the nozzle attachment to prevent the brushes from getting clogged.
3.Check the corners. While you have the vacuum nozzle attachment, check the corners of the room and crevices, such as around the table and chair legs.

Cleaning tables and countertops
1.Dampen a cloth. Wet a cloth or some paper towel with clean water
2.Wipe over the counter. Wipe the damp cloth across the table or countertop, the moisture will help to capture the excess confetti.
3.Wipe any remainder into your hand. Using the same wiping motion, wipe any remaining confetti into your hand at the edge of the table or countertop.

Cleaning furniture, fabrics, and other difficult surfaces
1.Roll the lint roller across the fabric or furniture.
2.If you don't have a lint roller, use the sticky tape method instead. Creating an impromptu "glove" to roll the tape across the fabric to help pick up the confetti. Using a roll of scotch tape or masking tape is okay, but duct tape is the best.

Cleaning outdoor confetti
First of all – is this biodegradable confetti? Lots of products are! If it is, don't sweat if you can't get it all up. Do your best, and then the leftover confetti will compost naturally in the groundcover and soil.

1.Leaf blow the confetti into one spot. This helps gather it from a paved surface, grassy area, patio, or porch.
2.Use a rake to collect into a smaller pile.
3.Collect with a dustpan and brush. Use a dustpan and brush to collect all the confetti before disposing in the trash.

Is static electricity strong enough to pick up confetti?
Yes-if the pieces of paper or metallic confetti are small enough. Larger pieces of confetti and fabric confetti will not work. Test this out by inflating a balloon and rubbing it on a soft surface to create a charge. Then, pass the balloon over the affected area and watch the little bits of stubborn glitter attach themselves to the bottom of the balloon.
