Marco Polo learned this custom during his travels in China. Then, Marco Polo spread it to Italy, France and Spain. Both the Italians and the French adopted the custom, while the Spanish brought it to the New World after their conquest of Mexico. Later, the pinata evolved into one of the symbols of sin in Catholic culture. In China, the earliest piñata was made in the shape of a cow or buffalo. In order to welcome the arrival of the Spring Festival, the Chinese wrap papers of different colors in the shape of ox or buffalo, and decorate them with armor. The cattle are smashed hard with a colorful stick, and the seeds already wrapped inside are scattered all over the ground. Then everyone burns the remaining parts with fire and collects the ashes to pray for good luck in the new year.
